Wait for a second, if we’re already living in an all-digital modern technology world, how more futuristic could it be and what could the next future of the Internet have to offer? Maybe humanoid robots? Flying cars? Teleportation technology? Or robot invasion?!

Let’s flashback a bit to the early years of the 2000s… Remember when everyone was worried about the Y2K problem, using heavy cuboid-like computers, search engines were “a thing”, and eventually led to the internet boom. And who would have thought that we’re now living in a very fast and rapid change in the IT field and technological advancement? People back then would be very shocked knowing how technology has influenced a lot of human life!

The year 1983 marked the official birthday of the Internet and allowed different kinds of computers on different networks to “connect and talk” to each other through a universal language of the internet. And fast forward to today, the 2020s marks another era of the Internet where we’re now heavily invested in developing the next generation of the tech space such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain networks, and many more tech innovations that might be ready-to-use by the end of the decade.

Some experts believe that by another few decades, the Internet will be like “electricity” – less visible and yet more deeply embedded in people’s lives. Some said blockchain networks will be replacing fiat money and how we define a currency. Some also said that with the huge development of VR/AR, physical screens might not be necessary as there will be implants placed over our eyes to access our digital world or even microchips implanted in our bodies.

So let’s dive into some predictions that experts believed about the Internet’s fate into a believable future reality for you to anticipate in the upcoming years. Well, everything seems creepy and too good to be true… But who knows? Everything might be happening sooner than you thought!

Web3 – Own a piece of the Internet

  • Starting from basic web pages, HTML, and java to e-commerce, social media, and cloud-driven. And soon enough, we’re entering another new era of the world wide web where not only you can read and write, but you can also own it – they called it Web3,  the future better vision of the internet where everyone gets their equal share of access to participate and opportunity to utilize the new world wide web. At its core, it is decentralized, permissionless, trustless and uses cryptocurrencies. As far as we know, Web3 is now under development to revamp traditional infrastructure and adopt a powerful ecosystem of technologies. And its capabilities of “read, write, and own” will once again change how we perceive the Internet.

Blockchain – The new currency network

  • Cryptocurrencies and NFTs trend seem to never die down yet, although the real technology behind these trends is in the blockchain network. As you might know, a blockchain is a digital database that is difficult or impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system. It works through distributed ledger technology (DLT), a digital system for recording transactions and tracking assets in a business network. Blockchain is more than just virtual coins and digital arts, it is considered as a “transformative technology” as now many industries have started to implement them because it is ideal, faster, and more accurate when delivering information with complete transparency. Experts believe the future more developed blockchain technology will be a “game-changer” to the world.

Metaverse – Enter a new reality of life

  • The term itself describes a hypothetical version of the Internet as a single, universal, and immersive virtual world that is facilitated by the combination of virtual reality and augmented reality accessed through a browser or headset, which allows people to have real-time interactions and experiences across distance. Metaverse itself isn’t coined to a specific type of tech but rather a broad shift in how the future interaction of technology. So what you can do with it is you can work, play, shop, socialize — do the things humans like to do together in real life. Many major businesses have heavily invested in the Metaverse as they believe virtual reality offers a more engaging experience and expands internet capabilities. It’s like entering a “whole new and better reality” for humans to connect and interact.

The internet has been a wonderful creation and contribution to human civilization in the 21st century, and no doubt will create more amazing things in the future. Apart from web3, blockchain, and metaverse, there is definitely another potential tech that we might haven’t discovered yet. The future of the Internet will be bigger, faster, safer, and more private with vast innovation coming in soon enough. So, what do you think future human life would be like in the 22nd century of the Internet?
